It’s summer and things feel just that little bit slower. Everyone seems to be either on holiday or planning to be “out of office, back soon”!
Meanwhile, the work? It’s still there, still piling up.
Sound familiar?
Whether you’re running a small team or flying solo, the summer slow-down can make it feel like your perfectly planned projects are slipping as you look to juggle everything over the summer hols.
But you can stay sane and keep things moving with a bit of foresight, flexibility and (yes) a contingency plan.
Here’s how to navigate the summer juggle without dropping the ball:
1. Know Who’s Off (and When)
This one sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many agency owners get caught out by vague “sometime in August” messages.
Get crystal clear on everyone’s availability. Use a shared calendar. Ask your team (and even your clients!) to lock in their time off early.
Pro tip: Map out timelines and don’t wait for the last-minute panic.
2. Update Your Critical Paths
Not everything needs to happen this week. But some things do. Map your non-negotiables (deadlines, deliverables, approvals) and work backward from there.
Ask yourself: What are the bare minimums that keep this project from stalling?
Focus your team’s time on those. Everything else can wait or be rescheduled without the drama.
3. Process, Process, Process
When one team member’s away, gaps in your workflow can get really exposed, fast.
Now’s the time to lean hard on systems.
Think:
- Project boards that actually reflect real-time status
- Template briefs so no one’s guessing
- Checklists for handovers
This isn’t about micromanaging. It’s about removing the brain fog for you and everyone else.
4. Communicate Like a Pro
Don’t assume people know.
Tell your clients: “We’re heading into the summer season and here’s how we’re managing capacity…”
Tell your team: “Here’s what I need from you before your break and what to expect when you’re back.”
If you’re cleart now = fewer fires later.
5. Give Yourself Some Grace
You might not get everything done. That’s not failure… It’s a summer hols reality.
Summer shifts priorities for a lot of people. You’re not lazy. You’re adjusting.
Your job isn’t to do everything. It’s to keep the priorities moving and carve out space for your own reset too.
And if it all still feels like a juggle…. that’s because it is.
But a bit of forward planning, clearer comms and letting go of the need to do it all? That’s what keeps the wheels turning (and your sanity intact).
Go easy on yourself and don’t forget to take your own break too.
